On the sands of Praia do Barril Beach in Tavira, Portugal, hundreds of rusted anchors rise from the earth in silent rows — one for each fishing boat, each crew, each family whose livelihood was built on the tuna that once filled these waters.

The Cemitério das Âncoras — the Anchor Cemetery — is one of Portugal's most haunting and beautiful memorials. These anchors once held the great nets of the traditional tuna fishing industry in place, season after season, for generations. When the fisheries collapsed under the weight of industrial overfishing, the boats stopped coming. The anchors stayed.

What remains is something extraordinary — an accidental art installation, a field of iron and rust and memory, standing watch over a beach that was once the centre of a community's world. Each anchor is different. Each one tells a story.
